~ From the Director ~
Many patients, myself included, would not be alive if it weren't for
rapid developments in medical science. When I was first diagnosed with a
chronic form of Leukemia I was told point blank that there was no cure
for my illness. A few years later doctors began using Bone Marrow
Transplants to cure this disease.
We are always hoping for medical breakthroughs for our loved ones or
ourselves. Part of our work involves staying abreast of the latest
medical news that impacts on our illness. This includes news about
standard medical treatments as well as alternative therapies that may
help slow the progress of our illness or help to bolster our strength
and well-being.
As always, one of the difficulties is finding the time... So this month
for our Feature Article we are providing you with a health news site
that offers medical news and articles.
By subscribing to one of our Medical WebGuide Reports you can receive
comprehensive guidance and access to a range of organizational and other
dedicated news sources that provide detailed current news about your
specific condition, new treatments and the latest developments. Each
WebGuide Report also provides sites that feature news stories about
promising alternative and complementary medical treatments. Best of all,
our Medical WebGuide Reports include news sites where you can register
to receive email news alerts about the condition you are interested in.
So you can devote your time to other concerns.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

~ Patient Best Practices Feature Article: "Doctor, Doctor Give Me The
News..." ~
It is important to keep up with current news and developments concerning
your condition. At the same time it can be frustrating to read bold
headlines declaring a breakthrough for a disease only to find in the
text that doctors expect this "breakthrough" to be available sometime in
the next ten years. That's why it is very useful to have access to a
range of professional health news sources.
One medical news site that we recommend is Health Day, an
internationally syndicated daily consumer health news service. Its award
winning reporters produce up to twenty articles daily on the latest
health news. You can easily locate both current and past disease related
news stories by using the search engine.
To use the site:
1.Go to the home page at: www.healthscoutnews.com.
2.Scroll down right hand column under "Archive Search."
3.Enter your search term (usually the name of a disease) into the search
engine either by "Keyword" or by "Topic"
4.View the results.
One search suggestion - When entering the search term for the condition
you are interested in, for example, "Parkinson's disease," enter the
name of the condition, "Parkinson's" but not the generic term "disease."
Otherwise this site (and others) will provide you with articles that
contain the word "disease," unrelated to Parkinson's disease.

~ Humor ~
Every day after work a doctor would go into a local bar to unwind and
would order an almond daiquiri from the bartender whose name was Dick.
One day the bar ran out of almonds and Dick figured that he could
substitute hickory nuts instead and that the doctor probably wouldn't
notice the difference.
A little later the doctor came in and ordered his usual almond daiquiri.
After taking a sip of his daiquiri the doctor paused and then asked:
"Is this an almond daiquiri Dick?"
To which the bartender replied: "Nope - This is a hickory daiquiri doc."
Feel Good!
